Wouldn’t you like to know who popped the first kernel of corn, and why?
It’s like….who actually chose to snarf down the first raw oyster (mmmm, snot of the sea!).
OK, maybe it’s not like that at all.
There are early written records of popcorn that date to the early 1500’s; when Cortes invaded Mexico and came into contact with the Aztecs he saw his first popcorn. It was an important food Aztec and they also used other as decoration for ceremonial headdresses, necklaces, and ornaments on statues of their gods. It’s way older than that though; in South America, kernels of popcorn found in burial grounds in the coastal deserts of North Chile were so well preserved they would still pop even though they were 1,000 years old.
Just think how long people have been snacking on popcorn…a simple snack with a very long history!
