“What are the Hatchery Olympics “you ask?
A bit of holiday silliness dreamt up by the crew at the facility I work out of.
They were team based time trials and involved seven “events”.
- Fish sorting
- Participants had to don full rain gear (boots, rubber overalls, jacket, and shoulder length rubber gloves) and run out to the sort tub…a large tote filled with soapy water and half water filled balloons submerged beneath. Competitors had to sort x number of males, female, and jacks (denoted by different coloured and shaped balloons)
- Bucket running in full rain gear while also wearing a bulky pfd
- Again, the individual competitors needed to don the same gear as int he first event, and then pull on a bulky pfd before running to a table filled with feed buckets. They had to pick up as many buckets as possible at a time and run them to another table. Dropping a bucket would result in a time penalty.
- Egg picking (using coloured beads and extra long forceps)
- Pick out all the “dead” (white) beads (eggs) before your opponent does.
- Precision feed weighing
- Team sport – the team had to weigh out 1320g of feed into a bucket on a tired scale (they had to remember to tare it!) without going over. But the catch was that one couldn’t sprinkle the feed from the scoop to reach the goal…whatever was taken into he scoop had to be put in the bucket, so the goal was accurate eyeballing of weight before putting it into the bucket.
- Blind fish transports (using a wagon filled with balloons) and backing a trailer into a parking spot with under the direction of teammates
- This one was funny and difficult. The competitors were blindfolded and then handed a net to scoop
“fish” (balloons) from a container and into a transport trailer (wagon). Their teammates could assist them with directions (and a bit of physical nudging). Then the competitor was to back the trailer into a parking spot under the verbal directions of their teammates.
- This one was funny and difficult. The competitors were blindfolded and then handed a net to scoop
- Feeding
- One team member was handed a feed scoop and some weighted squares made from feed bags and the goal was to toss them accurately into a tote. Basically feeding fish meets corn hole.
- Fish bonking (using a bat and balloons)
- Competitors were handed a fish club and ran to a bucket filled with balloons. The were to kill the fish (balloons) by popping them with the club. Harder than it sounds as the hit needed to be accurate or the bat merely shot the balloon off in some random direction and then had to be retrieved to try again.
Hilarity ensued and the winning team took home the golden fish trophy, 3D printed by the hosting hatchery.
Fun was had by all.
