Amethyst is one of my favourite gemstones; I love its purple hues. Into the 1700’s the stone was considered one of the cardinal gemstones and, along with diamond, emerald, sapphire, and ruby had extremely high value. When large deposits of the crystals were found in other parts of the world, it lost its value and was demoted to semiprecious status.
