I have this funky little light called a Litra Torch 2.0. Two of them actually. They are little cubes, about an inch and a half square. They are supposed to be waterproof, but I’ve never dropped one in a bucket of water to see.
They are designed for photography and there are various little attachments to put them in places like the hot shoe, on a headband, on a bike handlebar, etc.
There is even a rubber handle that I found that screws into it and turns it into. crazy high powered little flashlight. This is what I use it for the most. It’s compact, slips into my pocket or into the bottle holder on my backpack.
At this time of year, it’s how I find my way through the pitch-black forest on my hikes to and from the office down at the hatchery.
It has four settings: low, medium, high (and it’s REALLY high), and strobe.
I always wondered how long it would last on its highest setting.
Today I found out.
Not long enough.
My hoof through the woods takes about 25-30 minutes (longer if a dog is encountered). I turned it on at about the cable bridge, and almost made it out of the forest.
But not quite.
Another 200 feet would have been useful.
You know, the 200 feet that included a hill covered in loose gravel and that sports a big boulder that was suddenly NOT in my vision.
That was fun.
Turns out that it gets little bit of juice back after it’s been off for a few moments, so I did eventually get low power to get me out of that predicament.
But now I know.
