The west coast at this time of year has a wonderfully isolated magic to it.
Some samples needed shipping to a lab so it necessitated a late afternoon drive to the post office in Tahsis, a drive of about 30-40 minutes depending on road conditions. We stopped and enjoyed the Three Sisters Waterfall…in full flow with the rains..before winding our way to the little post office in the sleepy little community at the end of the road.
While my colleague was inside sorting out the parcel shipment I was out in the rain admiring the wonderfully moody day…just the typically wonderful West Coast weather I love out this way.
There is a wonderful feel to this part of the world.
A loneliness…but not is a depressing way.
More of an isolated and comforting way.
As I stood in the rain, camera to my face, two separate vehicles drove up to pick up/drop off mail, and both smiled at me and made friendly comments about photography and the moody beauty in the view.
As I scanned the scene with my camera, a seal unexpectedly popped into my frame for just a moment. I caught a quick image before it ducked back beneath the grey waters….pockmarked with heavy raindrops. We stopped in at the coffee shop for a hot drink and the owner told us a humpback whale had been just metres off shore an hour before.
This place truly is magical.
On the way back to the hatchery we stopped in at Moutcha Bay to check on the lines anchoring the net pens to the ramp.
And then it was a short drive back to the hatchery to catch up on a few emails before calling it a day.
