The Same, But Different – Day 304

by The Philosophical Fish

My Alma Mater, and also still a place where I do some small measure of teaching (online though)…until I decide I’ve had enough, which isn’t quite yet.

I don’t get out here all that often, though it’s been a bit more frequent the past year or two given some collaborative projects through work, a return to in-person exam delivery, and the odd seminar that I make the time to drive out here to enjoy now that they are no longer virtual or even hybrid.

So much better in person.

This was my purpose today.

A fishy seminar by a fabulously upbeat and lively fish physiology friend…and also the weekly author of the #FishFriday posts I share on Facebook 🙂

So it was a “Suzie’s #FishFriday” type of day, but in really life, and on a Wednesday.

The same, but different.

Also the same, but different?

This campus.

It changes so drastically on such a regular basis. The major construction started over 20 years ago and it just never seems to slow down. I seem to recall, I think while I was still on campus, that it was at one point the biggest buyer of rebar and concrete in Canada for a bit.

So it’s still the same academic home to me, particularly on days when I get to sit in a room filled with grad students asking really cool questions, a few old of my grad school cohort, and a few others I know from back them. It still has that vibe, that energy that comes with being a placed filled with students learning and questioning.

But it’s also very different than it used to be.

Change is good.
