Crocosmia ‘Emily McKenzie’ – Day 260

by The Philosophical Fish

I used to have a massive clump of equally massive Crocosmia “Lucifer” that I eventually pulled out because it was so huge I couldn’t see past it to the rest of the garden. But I love that the flowers bring hummingbirds and went looking for something smaller. Eventually I fell in love with the Emily McKenzie flowers and they grow stems and leaves less than half the height of the Lucifer variety. I picked up a couple of plants last year but they didn’t do well. I’m not sure if it was the winter we had, or something else. But a month ago I noticed a few leaves and over the past week, while I was away in Bella Coola, they came into flower. Only one spike, but it’s a start, and when Crocosmias get a foothold they usually perform well.

So here is a lovely little splash of late summer orange to brighten up the edge of the back deck.

It makes me smile with its happy little face.
