Going anywhere on a long weekend is typically asking to sit in traffic. We’d thought about Whistler for about a millisecond, but the traffic on the Sea to Sky has become a gong show on the weekends now, and on a long weekend….ick. To be fair, it’s Sunday and probably the best day to go anywhere because most people are already where they were going, and not yet coming home because tomorrow is Labour Day. So if one wants to get out for a motorcycle ride, Sunday seemed like the right day.
As usual, we headed south across the border to get away from the worst road warriors, and it paid off, as it typically does.
We’d debated on Glacier and Baker vs Chuckanut Drive and Edison. Chuckanut and Edison won because Glacier was already clocking in at 31C by noon. No thanks. We opted for sticking to the coast where it would be cooler.
We pretty much rode right up to the border (thank you Nexus passes) and the border guard told Kirk to stay put and waved me up to join him…walked towards the back of my bike saying “I need to grab your licence plate number” I told him what it was before he got to the back of the bike and he just turned round, punched it into the computer, looked at the two of us and told us to have a good day. Literally didn’t ask either of us a question. (Home was just as easy, I didn’t even get the bike out of gear …all I got for a dialogue was “Anything coming in?”…”What? No.” “Have a nice evening.”)
And again…thank you Nexus passes.
Our usual route, a casual 336km down to Edison for a late lunch at Terramar and then home again.
A couple of stops to stretch along the road through Lummi, and to admire the setting sun in Birch Bay.
The beach in Birch Bay was filling with people to sit and enjoy the tranquil evening as the sun slowly started to put on its show.
Riding home we were heading into the most gorgeous and fiery orange sky….pulling into the driveway just before darkness settled well and fully in.
There is a feel to the air that summer is trickling to its inevitable end so days like these are gifts. The mornings are cool and the light is coming up later, but the afternoons and early evenings still have lots of warmth left in them. So we ride and enjoy the remains of the season when we can 😊
