No rain for a while, and now the temperatures are ratcheting up.
I noticed this morning on my walk to the hatchery that the “No smoking in the park” sign has gone up along the road, and the moss fairly deep in the canyon is already starting to become crispy.
As I was walking, I was looking up at the canopy above me and thinking about all the dead trees left behind by the combination of a couple of exceptionally dry years that collided with a boom cycle of hemlock looper moths that lasted for four years. It never used to enter my mind that the North Shore could ever be a fire risk; it’s a rainforest! But that has changed and now it concerns me that we live so close to a forest filled with tinder dry standing dead wood.
