….you take them both and then you have…….?
The Facts of Life?
If there is one thing that I have hated about the world post-COVID, it’s hybrid workplaces.
Video probably works well if you’re an extrovert; it sucks when you are an introvert who needs to see faces and body language to interpret words into context. Cameras are the panacea for some, and the horror for others. Some think that seeing a face on a computer screen solves the issue of the lack of face-to-face….others (like me) feel that it’s made life even worse because it provides the false impression that seeing a face on a screen is equivalent to a real human.
I hate life on camera.
Like, I really hate it.
Yes, I’m an introvert. But that doesn’t mean I hate people. It means that I collect energy during my time focusing on thought in a quiet environment, and being around people drains energy. It means I need solo-time to recharge. That doesn’t mean I don’t love being around people…I do, I really do love people who are interested in deep conversation on topics of interest. I don’t do surface conversation well, I suck at small talk, and I need to see body language to interpret how the conversation is going.
Without body language, I am a little bit lost.
Body language means more than a head and shoulders.
We now find ourselves in this weird world where we are trying to be connected, in a digitally connected world, where we are more and more physically disconnected.
It is so difficult for me, and it makes me sadder and more disconnected. Even though one can “connect”, I feel more isolated by our increasingly digitally connected environment.
And then, at the other end of the spectrum…..we are also in a world where we can spend a couple of hours on a video call, wth a couple of glasses of wine, with a best friend on the other side of the country, because of this stupid, annoying, frustrating, horrible, wonderful, little invention that sits atop the computer monitor.
Love hate relationship.
Life is a contradiction.
You know what else I hate?
The fact that as that I look at this photo I realize that the privacy cover isn’t centred…..going to have to go fix that now….except that I think that by centring it, it will cover the “l” in Logitech.
Dammit!
