The rain has really arrived and things are anything but dry and crispy in the forest now. The river was up today, and there is an abundance of wet loving organisms making a show in the forest floor. Slugs are crawling out from their hiding spots and all sorts of mushrooms are popping up everywhere.
Today’s tiny treasure was less than an inch tall and nestled in a blanket of moss on a fallen tree. I love how ethereal and soft the image came out of the camera. Not every photo benefits from being tack sharp and, even though this was shot on my Lumix, it feels like a Lensbaby image.
The weather also left the forest enveloped in a blanket of mist and it makes for a fabulously moody walk to and from work. Well…from….”to” work was in almost complete blackness, so even with a flashlight to light my way on the trail I wasn’t really seeing a lot. Soon “from” is going to feel the same….but until it does I’m going to enjoy the little treasures I find along the way.
I realized, as I looked into the misty depths of the trees, that I have now been walking this trail for a fourth fall season. I first started spending more time at the hatchery in the fall of 2020 as a means to escape working from home. Four Octobers later I am still enjoying this walk regardless of the weather conditions.
Never have I looked out and thought “I’d rather work from home than make the walk down to the hatchery“.
