Sunday’s Saprophytes (288/365/2023)

by The Philosophical Fish

I’ve been running to many days in a row with out enough time to receuperate and it came home to roost a couple of days ago. I need a break, but every time someone goes running by I think to myself “I suck” and feel guilty for not running.

So today I consoled myself by going for a hike. I haven’t hiked my canyon as much as I have in recent years so it’s time to get back to doing some regular trail trudging. I got 9.23km in, so I call that a “not bad” day on the trails. Not a run, but I’ll take it.

There has been some good rain recently, and today’s hike seemed like it brought the saprophytes springing out in a way I haven’t seen for some time. They were everywhere!

And it just feels like it wouldn’t be a wander through the watershed without the requisite photo of a Banana Slug. So here you are, today’s slimy cutie.

I could hear that the river was running higher than it has been for months, and crossing over the dam confirmed this. The dam is spilling more than it has for a long time, and it was gratifying to peer down over the spillway.

On the way back down the east service road, and on my home stretch, I encountered a little garter snake heading across the gravel road for the safety of the forest on the other side. I feel a tad guilty for interrupting it and cutting off its escape for a bit while I took a few images with my phone before backing off and allowing it to escape to safety.
