I’ve been on vacation the past two weeks. Some of that time was a motorcycle trip. Some of it was recuperating from that trip. And one day of it was volunteering my time to an annual sockeye collection on the Upper Pitt.
I was sort of caught off guard on the spawning this year since I had been under the impression this program was being cut, but then I received an email asking if I had time to attend one of the egg take days and …. well …. of course!
Sure, it seems like work, and technically it is, but it’s also a program I enjoy helping out on because the people come from several different hatcheries, from community programs, and some from the office. It’s a collection of individuals who enjoy reconnecting with the hands on work early in the season and usually under decent weather conditions.
Most people probably don’t want to spend a day doing the sort of work they typically engage in on their day off, but sometimes I do 🙂
While we were pulling the nets in, a helicopter descended and landed on the gravel bank near us. The pilot got out with a bag in hand and said he was supposed to pick Carlos up. He held up the bag and said that the last time he was up Carlos gave him some Mexican food (no surprise, Carlos is Mexican and an excellent cook) and that he brought the dishes back in the hopes that Carols would refill them. 🤣 He walked up the road and across the bridge and eventually returned, with Carlos, to do a flight over the river to count fish.
