Dipper Tracks (235/365/2023)

by The Philosophical Fish

It was another day fishing the Shovelnose and we had a little bit of success. The usual few pink salmon that we had to remove from the net throughout the day, a small hatchery buck, and an unclipped buck, probably a three year old, and which could be hatchery or wild because the hatchery was unable to clip fish in 2020 due to COVID…that one was tubed and transported back to the hatchery.

So a little bit of success today.

But while we sat watching the net, watching the river, watching the mid-day traffic float by in the four big yellow rafts, a little American Dipper entertained us as it bobbed and dipped along the log behind which our net was set.

It dipped along, singing its little heart out (which I’d never heard one do before), then flew across to our sandbar and sang and danced along in front of us on the sand. I didn’t want to pull my camera out and disturb it because it was so mesmerizing watching it bob and weave on past. So I settled on a photo of its tracks after it had moved on.

The dipper should have been the bird of BC in my less than humble opinion.
