Terramar (217/365/2023)

We found this place in late June when we did a ride down Chuckanut Drive and into Edison. We turned the corner intending to park on the road and go to the Longhorn Saloon…but the corner didn’t end where it used to….the road went farther and there were new places down towards the river. When we rode down to explore the short stretch, we found a few new artists galleries and workshops…and a place called Terramar Brewstillery; a wonderful place with a wonderful outdoor area out back. They have a very limited pizza menu, like five I think, plus four “small plates”, three salads, and ice cream….that’s pretty much the extent of the food menu….the beer menu is bigger….but the pizzas are very, very good.

There are other new places…a BBQ place (Brando’s BBQ….smells AMAZING!) on one corner of Bow Hill Road and Chuckanut Drive, and new place just opened called Cob & Cork kitty corner to it. The Rhody is still there….and I can’t believe we’ve never eaten there….I have heard it’s good too….we just always used to head to the Longhorn for the fun of being the only sport bikers at a Harley bar…..but now that place is less biker than it used to be, and more walking touristy types with flip flops or hiking shoes. When we went there last week for the first time in about six years it was like “What happened to this place?” The food was still excellent, but it definitely had a different (more inclusive) vibe that it ever used to….it’s a good thing, it’s just really different.

It’s still a bit strange. It’s only been a few months since we lost Gizmo, and both of us still have an internal clock that says we need to be home by dinner time because something is at home waiting to be fed and/or medicated. It will take a long time before either of us stops looking at a clock and feeling agitated around 5-6pm I think. It really is odd, in a sad way, to not need to be home at a certain time.

Anyway, good ride, good food, no excitement…except for that woman that pulled a u-turn and tried to take us both out as she accelerated out of a side street without stopping at the stop sign or even looking. Kirk accelerated to get out of the way, I braked and blasted my wussy motorcycle horn….she freaked out and stopped before any harm occurred.

Oh, and there was also the little kid that ran out from between parked cars to bolt across the road in front of Kirk in Birch Bay State Park….good survival skills though, he ran a tight circle back into safety as Kirk braked hard and I braked harder to not go up Kirk’s tailpipe.

OK, maybe a little excitement. Gotta keep the eyes open and the spidey senses sharp on the bikes.

You always need a little excitement on a road trip, but not necessarily the trouble kind. I.e. Near misses always keep you sharper!
