Sometimes you have a plan for a weekend, and then it gets thrown out the window. Today was like that.
The bikes are insured and back on the road and so weekends are now intended for riding. But Late Friday I received a text from someone asking if I wanted their tickets to a concert at the Commodore Ballroom tonight since they had suffered a minor accident that had left them on crutches and coming across the water to Vancouver and attending a concert was not going to happen. I’d never heard of the band, listened to a few clips online, didn’t dislike the sound, and said sure, why not.
So the day included a quick run across the border to pick up some mail order items waiting at a shipping and receiving company, and back again….
….an opportunistic stop at a new garden centre just back on this side of the border that I hadn’t been to before….
….and a few other errands, before taking the sea bus downtown, dinner and drinks at the Tap & Barrel, and then a walk up Granville Street to the Commodore Ballroom.
There was a line outside the Commodore and, as we walked to the end of it, past the Orpheum, I stopped for a moment to take a photo of my favourite sidewalk star and Hall of Famer 🙂
The opening (Jeffrey Silverstein) act had an interesting sound, I think he called it “Cosmic Country”. Not entirely our taste of music, but interesting.
The mainliner was a band called “Fruit Bats”. An indie folk’ish rock band, with a sound that at times has notes of The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Modest Mouse, and Blue Rodeo. It’s hard to put a finger on the sound and, while probably not a band I would have otherwise bought tickets to go see, it was good.
It was also the first time I’d been in the Commodore Ballroom since we went to see Tim Finn, with 10,000 Maniacs opening for him. And that was a veeeeeeeeery long time ago.
And that’s what kind of a Saturday it was.
