I’m not really much of a flower gardener, I mostly like texture and shades of green. But I do have a few flowering plants that I have some measure of appreciation for, mainly because they are an added bonus to a plant that I like for its texture and green foliage.
The first happy little flowering thing in the garden here today is the saxifrage. It’s an interesting plant, variegated and creeping, that looks a bit like a sedum or a spurge. But the flowers are always spectacular. They are tiny, tiny little flowers, held on tall spikes, in a profuse wave, like a cloud, high above the plants below.
The second here today, is the wisteria. I had a fabulous Japanese wisteria back at the condo. It flowered early, but beautifully. The wisteria I planted here at the new place, the first year after we moved in, I thought, is a Chinese wisteria. But when I looked at descriptions this evening, I actually think it may be an American wisteria because it blooms so much later than the typical wisteria plants. I like that about it, because most other things are finishing up when this one kicks its flowers out in a showy fashion.
So, ultimately, I am not entirely certain which wisteria it is, but when it finally blooms…it is very pretty, though perhaps not as showy as the Japanese variety.
