Asparagus (68/365/2023)

by The Philosophical Fish

When I was a kid my Granny grew the most beautiful flowers in her garden. Gladiolas, dahlias, carnations, ……. I think she loved her flowers and I always remember flower on the table in the summer. She also had a collection of glass flower frogs….I have a number of them having added them to the collection of odds and ends that I rescued when the house was being emptied. I remember, while she still lived in the house, looking for a flower frog in Vancouver for my own use and being met with blank stares. It seemed so funny that something I’d assumed was a common item, wasn’t.

What does that have to do with asparagus?

I’m getting there…..have a little patience!

Included in almost every vase of flowers was a bit of greenery….usually some ferny thing. And it was decades before I realized that (I’m reasonably sure) it was asparagus….allowed to grow.

Oddly, I don’t ever recall asparagus being on any menu when I was growing up. I am aware that I was the world’s pickiest eater and probably would have been horrified by it’s appearance as a meal component as a kid…..but I’m reasonably certain I was never presented with asparagus on my dinner plate until I was an adult. That is possibly because asparagus is a spring harvest, and I was usually there in the summer when the asparagus was no longer being picked?

Grilled asparagus is on the menu tonight, and it brought back a happy memory 🙂
