The Pothole (66/365/2023)

by The Philosophical Fish

Some days this pothole feels like a metaphor…..

It’s a recurring pothole on the road down to the hatchery. It gets filled in and paved over a couple of times every year, and then the weather shifts, it rains, it freezes, the asphalt gives way and cracks, cars drive over it and chip away at its strength and structure…and eventually the chips become divots, the divots become missing chunks, and eventually the chunks scatter and break away and the pothole returns. Ans then someone eventually plops a pylon in the hole so that drivers won’t damage their wheel in it.

It’s sort of how something makes you angry, and you push it into a corner of your mind, trying to ignore the issue. But little things bring your focus back to it, and then other things point at it and make it fester, and people bring up things related to it….and the thing becomes bigger and more irritating and difficult to ignore. And then, because people figure out that you are angry about their shit-show, they put a metaphorical pylon out so they can say they are doing ‘something’ about the problem when really they are just trying to avoid the pothole rather than actually do the right thing about it and fix the underlying problem.

And that’s what went through my mind this morning as I walked down to the hatchery with something unpalatable bothering me.
