The Wet Coast (8/365/2023)

by The Philosophical Fish

We had a dry summer, an unusually warm fall, and then some snow over Christmas…..but things have largely returned to our regularly scheduled programming/weather.

The Pacific Northwest can always be counted on for some miserable winter weather.

When I first moved to Vancouver I didn’t realize how much weather could affect my mood. I was a winter lover….cold days (like really, really cold days) didn’t really phase me because the sky on those days was usually bright blue and the sun would be blinding off the dazzling white snow. Sure, your face hurt and your nose hairs froze….but it seemed like an ok price to pay for the beauty that winter would bring.

Fast forward to 1987 and I was ready for the non-stop drizzle and depressing grey skies that October was to bring.

Except it didn’t, at least not that first October.

That year it was fabulous. A late summer kept temperatures high well into October and I thought Vancouverites were whiners….until the rain eventually started….and I thought it might never end.

Now I’m a whiner too.

I’d like to say it doesn’t bother me after this many years, but it does, sometimes. I suppose I am used to it, but I still find it far easier to put on a jacket and go out in the cold and snow than I do when the rain is falling and the skies are gloomy.

i.e. I did not run today as I should have…..however….I did take some photos from the passenger window of the truck as we ran errands today…and I kinda like the abstract visions and bright spots of colour against the gloomy backdrops.
