When we moved into our new home 8 years ago I didn’t think about hummingbirds. And then, in January (!?!) Kirk said he saw one on our upstairs deck. I thought he’d lost his mind, until I saw one a few days later.
There was snow on the ground….and a hummingbird buzzing around?
I hadn’t realized that there was a species of hummingbird (Anna’s Hummingbirds) that were resident year-round in Southern BC and that they feed on small insects in tree bark, and wherever else they can find them, through the winter months.
So we started putting feeders out for them and now, in the middle of winter, we have to work to keep them from freezing on the coldest days. Because we have habituated them to the feeders, we now have an obligation to maintain their snack bars.
