Happy Valentine’s Day

by The Philosophical Fish

It doesn’t snow often in Vancouver and it’s rarely very cold when it does so, when it does…..you go enjoy it at the beach…or pretty much anywhere. We opted for a walk down at Ambleside.

I do appreciate living here, for many reasons, but the reason today was the combination of snow and not-so-cold weather. I’ll take snow over rain, any day, but I do definitely prefer it a little warmer than where I grew up. Back home, snow was a sign (usually) of warmer weather. It’s not terribly common for it to snow at -30 so, after a stretch of that sort of cold, if you awoke to find snow it usually meant that it had warmed up to somewhere in the vicinity of -10C….downright balmy.

Around the duck pond at Ambleside we stopped because there was “something” in the tree above us. It was large, grey, and sort of oval. Kirk thought it was a wasp’s nest, I thought it was an owl. We were both wrong…it was a headless blue heron….everything it could possibly tuck into itself was tucked into itself. All that was sticking out was a single long leg. It turned out there were headless blue herons everywhere…I think I counted about ten or so, scattered among the trees surrounding the pond. I may like winter snow, but clearly they weren’t as impressed as me.

Here, in Vancouver, on a snowy Sunday, one finds snowmen of every shape and size everywhere you look. People don’t get to build snowmen very often on the coast, so they take advantage of it when they can.

It was a perfect Valentine’s Day 💋
