Existential Dread

by The Philosophical Fish

I’m in a bit of a funk and these two photos sort of spoke to me today.

In a high priced neighbourhood where old homes are demolished as soon as they are sold and monster houses replace them, this old relic is an unexpected hold out. Just a few blocks from home it stands in stark contrast to the multi-million dollar homes…even though its double sized corner lot would easily fetch as much.

In its side yard, an old car, that seems like it would have some interesting memories to share, is slowly being engulfed blackberry canes and English ivy.

From the back of the house, laughter filtered through the bushes as two children rocked back and forth on a swing set, like a pair of pendulums.

In a neighbourhood of perfectly manicured landscapes, a little patch of nostalgia.

I have been feeling a little melancholy today and couldn’t find any inertia to pick up the camera. This photo is from the weekend, when we were out walking and I had the Lensbaby Velvet 28 on the camera. I like how the Lensbaby really makes the image feel as if it is a scan of an old film photo, particularly after flipping it into monochrome, it sort of depicted how I’m feeling.

Out of place.

I feel out of touch with the people I normally interact with; my usual site visits were obliterated by COVID. Sure, I can chat on Teams or talk on the phone, but that doesn’t really fill the void left by the lack of on site visits that allow engagement, organic discussion, and the ability to actually “see” what’s going on. Arm waving over video is a poor substitute. What purpose do I serve when all I do right now is sit on this side of a computer?

I feel both loss and lost.

Out of place, out of touch.

“Existential crisis, also known as existential dread, are moments when individuals question whether their lives have meaning, purpose, or value, and are negatively impacted by the contemplation.”

Yes, that rather fits, that’s how I am feeling today.

It’s a disconcerting head-space to be in.
