…..shall return to the soil.
The sun was out this afternoon and it was lighting up the fading and yellowing hostas in the garden. The cold evenings have made them limp and they are sagging and starting to break down. They are one plant I don’t bother to clean up since they almost literally melt back into the soil.
When I was crouched down and photographing them a scene from a television show that aired from the mid-1970’s until the mid-1980s popped into my head.
I used to watch Different Strokes and there was this one episode where Arnold’s goldfish died. He insisted on having a funeral for it and that part of the scene wasn’t actually on camera…but you heard him say “Those that come from the sea shall return to the sea“…then there was a pause…followed by the toilet flushing.
Don’t even bother trying to make any sense of the way my brain processes information and connects it with other information. I can’t, so why would anyone else be able to.
Almost 40 years later and that scene stays with me.
So, this is my version…..that which comes from the soil eventually returns to the soil… Fall is a season of endings, but it’s also a season that sets the stage for the regeneration of the spring to come.
