History

by The Philosophical Fish

I stepped out the front door as I was thinking about what a terrible year it has been, in so many respects, for so many people.

And then my eyes fell on one of the two slabs of hemlock from the trees we felled a few years ago. They were massive trees, each about 45 metres tall. They were also dying, or one was for certain. They were dropping dangerous branches in heavy winds and one was rotting. If we hadn’t taken them down, they would have come down on someone’s home…most likely ours.

But I looked at the rings, the pattern of wide and narrow growth years. And I couldn’t help but wonder what this tree saw in its 100+ year lifespan.

This year has been awful in many aspects, but is also just a blip on the radar in an ecological sense.

Everything has a span….
