Northern Sea Oats (Chasmanthium latifolium)

by The Philosophical Fish

Another little treasure in my garden, not a flower for a change 🙂

I plant for texture, movement, and shades of green. If something flowers, that’s just a bonus, except for a few plants that I hate the flowers and just remove them because they detract from the foliage.

Not an issue with this plant.

It’s an ornamental grass and, although the foliage is relatively pretty and has nice movement in even the lightest air movement, that’s not why I like it. It’s the seeds at the end of the long delicate arching stems that I like.

As summer turns to fall, and as fall eases into winter, the foliage and the seeds turn brown, but they hold their shape and give interest all winter. They are a grass that does well in a pot, and tolerates shade, a winner all around.
