Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora ‘Emily McKenzie’

Again, one would think that I am a flower gardener from the number of flower photos I’ve included in my 365 project this year.

But I’m honestly not.

This afternoon I was sitting on my back deck and I was caught off guard when a woman’s voice said, “Hello neighbour, I’ve brought some friends to see your garden.” She likes my garden so much that we did tell her she was free to visit it any time, but it was still a surprise 🙂 As she was leaving she commented on all of the shapes of leaves, the different textures, and the huge variety of shades of green.

She is an artist and a retired teacher. And she gets me, and she understands my gardening style.

I planted some Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ corms a few years ago, and they did exceptionally well. A little too well. I knew they could get large, but I never expected them to grow taller than I am. And they are, or were, in a spot where their ginormous size made it difficult to see the rest of the garden from inside or even from the deck. So once they finished blooming and the hummingbirds no longer had their banquet, out they came.

I spent a bit of time out at the nursery today, speaking with a few plant specialists. I still wanted a Crocosmia in the same spot, because I want the hummingbirds to visit them in the future, but I needed something smaller and better behaved.

And orange…I love orange.

Fingers crossed that I got more than just the orange. We will find out next year when they come back up again.
