Bear’s Breeches (Acanthus mollis)

by The Philosophical Fish

COVID has disrupted all of our lives, and it’s kinda squashed my inspiration and feelings of creativity since it began. I picked a hell of a year to do a 365 project. On the upside, the things growing in the garden, and their timings, has never been so well documented.

I first saw this plant when visiting friends in England, at the Eden Project. It took me a few tries to find a location in my own garden that would make it happy, and it’s extremely happy this year, throwing up close to a dozen of these dangerously spiked heads.

I love the structure of the plant, which is why I thought B&W treatment would complement it more than colour.  I like the end result.

The second plant is Paris quadrifolia, a perennial related to our native trilliums, which is probably why they grow so well alongside them.

A friend and retired coworker gave me one when we first moved here; I had such a lot of garden space and she is a plant rescuer at the complex where she lives. As they re-landscaped, many things that were pulled out of their grounds subsequently arrived on my doorstep in buckets and kitty litter pans.

I could now, very easily, supply anyone else with enough green things to landscape another yard.

They are interesting, and the single blue berry that they hold above their (usually) four leaves makes a nice contrast. However, they self-seed all over the place and I pull out more than I leave in place most years.
