Something Silly

by The Philosophical Fish

I believe that every yard needs something silly. We are too serious most of the time, so slipping something into the landscape can make for a fun treat when you see it.

This particular yard has a tiny little pink flamingo tucked in behind a big rock….it’s easy to miss, but if you don’t miss it, it’s good for a smile.

I have a thing for pink flamingos. I don’t mean I want one in my yard, but they make me laugh; they have cultural staying power like nothing else.

I was going to take a day off from the camera today…I am just feeling a bit overwhelmed with things this past few days. Too many meetings, too many things coming at me from all directions, and I’m feeling burnt out. All the phone/zoom/MS Teams meetings are exhausting. I’m used to lots of meetings, but they usually involve being in a room with real people, whose facial expressions and body language make contexts simpler. They are usually in different rooms, on different floors, or in completely different locations, frequently in different towns. My FB feed lately has been reminding me that last year, and each year before that for the past eight years, I have been on float planes and ferries travelling to planning meetings on the Island.

No Island trips these days.

Instead I sit in front of a computer, with an earbud and a microphone, alone in my house…trying to focus on what comes through the speaker and into my ear.

And again…it’s mentally exhausting. The past week has seen at least three to four meetings, each between one and three hours long, every single day. And in the few minutes between meetings, the phone kept ringing with requests for advice on this or that. And there is still tomorrow to go, with…..more meetings.

And no field season as a light at the end of the tunnel to make it bearable.

So I just felt knackered and had no desire to take a photo or write any words.

But Kirk managed to get me out the door for a walk after dinner, and I had no valid reason to not take the camera, so this is it.

Better than nothing I suppose, but certainly no work of art.

But good for a smile.
