Bleeding Heart: (noun) a person considered to be dangerously softhearted, typically someone considered too liberal in political beliefs.
I probably fit that bill on some topics, and definitely not on others.
While I am not a particular lover of flowers in the garden, I do enjoy the presence of these native bleeding hearts. I actually like them better than the more showy varieties that have been bred from the dainty originals.
I have a patch of native bleeding hearts in one, very shady, corner of the garden. Most of them came from a friend and former coworker. When we first started building the garden she would drop buckets of plants off; plants that were being culled from her townhouse complex.
She was a bleeding heart in that she wanted to find new homes for now homeless plants, and I was a bleeding heart for vagrant plants that needed a home.
Seems ironic that one of the homeless in need of a home was actually…a bleeding heart plant 🙂
They have done well here where they have a deep and moist dappled shady spot to call home, beneath a few cedar trees.
It’s not the forest, but it’s not too far off, and they seem to have done well.
