The weather is so nice this week; warm, sunny, hardly a cloud anywhere. Those same conditions mean that the garden is starting to explode. The anemones are starting to look like blankets of foliage and flowers, the hostas are poking their noses out of the soil, and the trilliums are in full flower. The paper bush is in full bloom, the hellebores are finishing up, and the epimediums are throwing flower spikes toward the sky.
And the star magnolia is finally opening up.
I love the huge pink magnolia trees, the tulip trees as Mom used to identify them. There are a number of them up and down our street, but they are both massive and messy.
I settled instead for a small star magnolia when I started working on this garden. It would grow larger and flower more spectacularly if it was in a sunnier spot, but I’m short on sunny spots and it still puts on a moderate show, one that I appreciate.
