Weirdly, so many people are panic buying toilet paper and an excess of literally everything they don’t need, an overabundance of that which they do need, and forgetting some of the things that they probably do need.
There is a fine line between setting oneself up for a few weeks of staying home, and provisioning for the end of days.
I almost feel lucky to be in self-isolation. Finding out that was going to be a necessity less than 24 hours before picking Kirk up from the airport gave me time to pop into some quiet grocery stores, the drug store, and the local produce shop to pick up a few extra things, particularly the fresh food items, to get by for the next couple of weeks. And the lucky part of that is that I knew we were going into self-isolation before it really hit home for many, and before the smaller grocers were hit with crowds. When I went out for the things I wanted to add to the pantry, the stores were calm, quiet, and virtually empty.
Not so a day or two later when the reality hit home and all those travellers returning home were madly stocking up on more than they need.
I can’t imagine cooking without garlic and shallots on a weekly basis; two of our favourite dinner flavourings. How can you have a risotto without shallots? Unthinkable!
But really, we get some things through SPUD organic delivery services anyway (milk, cream, and a few other items) and I put us back on a regularly scheduled standing order for those items so I don’t have to fight the hordes now buying online and bogging down the various grocery systems.
Out of curiosity today (and procrastination where my marking is concerned), I discovered that I could easily book a delivery from the local grocery store for Sunday if needed but that, should I have wanted to, I would not be able to have wine delivered for up to two weeks.
It appears that some people have priorities that align with my own.
I also stopped at Everything Wine on Friday morning, before picking up the potentially-infected-one, to pick up a case of some of our favourite red wine….
I was thinking ahead 🙂
