Some days the shower is my Hypothetical Argument Simulator, some days it’s my Thinking Chamber. The problem is that when it’s my Thinking Chamber I think half my thoughts end up being washed down the drain.
Like this morning, when I was showering I was thinking about a pair of presentations I have agreed to give. One, an hour long, for a community workshop, the other, 30 minutes, for an annual manager’s meeting.
I’ve been having trouble getting them started and I only have a little over a week to get the first one figured out.
Maybe that’s part of the problem, I never seem to be able to get myself writing presentations until I am into the 11th hour and the panic sets in.
I used to typically write lectures on the ferry on the way to teach, finishing them up moments before dashing into my classroom. I wrote my PhD thesis defence presentation the night before. When you have so much potential content to use, it makes it harder to whittle it down and figure out how to get your message across compared to when you have limited information to draw on.
I tried to pull from previous presentations, but that’s always hard too. it’s sometimes easier to start from scratch.
So in the shower this morning, as I was washing my hair, I started thinking of the messages that I think are important to take away and suddenly I had some great ideas…but I was in the shower…which meant that by the time I got out and dried off and rushed for a pen and paper….half of the thoughts had gone down the drain with the shampoo.
Typical.
