Just playing with the new Lensbaby Velvet 85 lens that Kirk picked up for me on a recent trip to Portland. The lenses are manufactured in Portland, there is no sales tax in Oregon, and Kirk was going to be there for a few days and could bring it back duty free. The savings added up to about $200 buying it there and bringing it back, vs buying it here or online.
I love a good deal 😀
It’s extremely well built, and completely manual, making it a challenging learning curve.
But I think we’ll be good friends eventually.

I love that picture. So romantic.
That’s what the lens is known for and why I bought it. It is the antithesis of the perfect sharpness most lenses are known for. Although at high apertures it is tack sharp, but I didn’t buy it for that.
I have a few other of their earlier lenses, but they are far less expensive and far lesser quality.
How do you like the lens? Do you have any other lensbaby?
I do. I have the Composer and quite a number of their early optics. They are fun, though it’s fussy to have to carry so many little bits, which is why I wanted to try one of their new line.
It’s a really well built lens, all metal, even a metal cap. It is smooth to rotate and just feels solidly made.
I only got it a week ago and only took it out for a short trial yesterday.
It’s not a lens for everybody; a lot of people probably don’t like the softness and the out of focus nature of the Lensbaby
I also went for the 85mm instead of the 56mm since I have a really good 50mm prime, and a really good 60mm macro prime.
