October 2, 2017 – We use words every day and too frequently we spend very little time thinking about what those words are, what they mean, and what impact they may have once we release them. But this isn’t a heavy discussion about language, it’s just a short little thought about one word.
“The”
I have a funny relationship with the word “the”.
When I was writing my PhD thesis I gave a draft copy to one of my committee members. Martin gave it a good read and had a lot of great suggestions; he was an excellent and thorough editor. One of the things he asked me to do was go back through the entire document and look at every single iteration of the word “the” and decide if it was really necessary in the sentence. Turns out a very large number of them were not. His point was taken, re-read the thesis and decide if all the words were really necessary to make the points I was trying to make.
I also (very) frequently type too quickly and end up with “teh” on the page instead of “the”.
The word “the” is the most commonly used word in the English language. I mean look at that last short sentence, I used it four times in there!
This “the” was found on The Presentation Gallery, the new art gallery being built on Lower Lonsdale in North Vancouver.
Just a random shot.
