September 4, 2017 – Today we went into MEC so I could exchange a pair of shorts that had a seam malfunction. MEC has the most amazing guaranteee on everything they sell, I once went in and mentioned some candles I’d bought that melted rapidly…the fellow said “Oh, I remember those, we called them the Chernobyl candles, you should bring whatever you have left back.”
“But I bought them like threee years ago!”
He looked intot he computer and said to me, “Yes, I see that, but they are in here in your purchase history and I can totally give you your money back on whatever you have left.”
So I did, and they were exchanged for some excellent beeswax candles that do not leave an insane wax puddle on the deck of our boat.
But when I went in to see about an exchange on the shorts, I didn’t expect to end up with a pair of new paddle boards.
But sometimes life goes like that, and you have to just go with the flow. We’d tried the things a couple of times earlier this summer and I’d been skeptical about enjoying them – I kayak, why would I want to use one of these silly things.
How wrong I was.
They were a blast! And crap are they good exercise!
We tried again, played on some demo boards to see what kind we might like. We tried inflatables and solid boards. We tried wide ones and really narrow ones. We tried touring boards and all purpose boards. But we didn’t really think we’d end up with one this season.
And then I took those darned shorts back. Kirk wandered off while I was doing the paperwork and when I found him he was in the water sport section and he smiled at me and said “They’re on sale”.
Dammit!
But the sale was good enough that it meant the paddles, leashes, and deck cords ended up being free if based on the original price.
We left, went for a bite to eat, talked and thought, and after a couple of hours, ended up back at MEC and drove out with two boards safely locked down on the truck’s roofrack.
We rushed home, changed, and headed for Ambleside to paddle out and enjoy the sunset. A little wavier than we’ve been on before, and Kirk involuntarily went for a refreshing dip, but it was a good decision, I see much use in their future.
And with that, here are some pretty sunset pictures.
Life is good on the West Coast.
