June 26, 2017 – There is nothing that tastes like summer to me so much as corn. Granted, it usually meant late summer and now new varieties have brought the taste earlier into the season…but I’m ok with that.
That said, I do miss one treat that was always a part of my life…. De Mille’s mystery corn. It was the best (at least the best after Granny & Grandad no longer had the farm and Grandma & Grandpa’s orchard was no longer in the family).
I loved stopping in on my way out of Salmon Arm, from visiting family, to pick up a few dozen cobs for myself and for a friend. It was one of those fleeting taste experiences that I’d look forward to all year and savour when it arrived…and remember wistfully when they’d all been consumed.
Corn will never be quite that good ever again, because the family and farms that generated the food and the associated memories are gone, but I can still bite into a cob and savour the taste and the memories that come along with the experience…with a bit of nostalgia…and remember all the fun and love that came along with the hard work we put into those summer seasons of picking and putting food up.
My favourite foods aren’t complicated and only require a bit of butter and salt, and a lot of good family memories.
