November 10, 2016 – Tuum est is a phrase found in the UBC coat of arms. Translated, it means “It is yours” or “It is up to you”. The world is yours, your education is up to you, here is the means, take it and run with it….define it how you like, any of those seem appropriate.
I was out at UBC, my Alma Mater, Tuesday and again today, to guest lecture in a course on stress and coping in animals. I provide the non-mammalian perspective and it’s the fourth time I’ve done it. It’s rather fun to spend a few hours in a class presenting and discussing stress and welfare in fish and not have the responsibility of marking papers, grading exams, or anything else other than just talking about a topic of interest.
And as an added bonus, it’s equally fun to take an hour or so to go visit some fishy “family” and catch up.
UBC was my daily home for about 12 years, and my association with the campus started in 1989. And the corner of West Mall and Agronomy Way was where I pretty much lived during the day from 1992 until 2004.
Home has a lot of different meanings to different people. I think we have numerous “homes” during our lives.
This was one of mine and it still holds a dear place in my heart, regardless of the blood, sweat, and all those tears, that I left behind.
Good times 😉
