November 1, 2016 – Just a little elephant figurine, one of a pair that Mom had, I gave the partner to my brother. Somewhere I have a sheet of paper that Mom wrote out that contained a little bit of history on the elephants. I have it somewhere, but at the moment I can’t recall exactly where. But I do know that they were keepsakes produced by the Elephant Fertilizer Company back in the 1950’s/1960’s.
The company was a subsidiary of Cominco, a mining and smelting company in BC. My Grandpa worked at the Trail smelter, owned by Cominco, way back before the family moved to Salmon Arm and bought the orchard.
Oddly, several years ago, in 2008, when the stock market crapped out, I bought some stock for the same company, then called Teck Cominco, and did very well with it. Teck Cominco then became just Teck, and I again have stock in them, and it’s again doing very well. And, also coincidentally, their head office is in the building right across the street from where I work. It’s a company that has a 100 year history in BC, and this little elephant is a part of it.
And I can say that there is always an elephant in my room 😉
