October 27, 2016 – Poor little Loki, first he was heavy, then he got sick and lost a lot of weight, then he went on steroids and got his appetite and someone else’s back, and then he gained all the original weight back.
The downside of the weight gain is that there is an increased risk of diabetes and that would complicate the issue that we have never received a diagnosis for.
So poor little hungry Loki went on a diet.
And our life became more challenging, because he wants to eat all the time, and the other cat hardly ever wants to eat. So as one cat got bigger, the other cat got smaller, not good on either end. We thought we had it all figured out, Milo learned to go through a small hole in the wall to get into another room where we could put his food, Loki was too big to get through the hole.
Or so we thought. Eventually he figured out that there was food over there and he bulldozed his way through. I got suspicious when Milo’s bowl started to seem too clean too often, then Kirk caught fatso back there.
So now we are back to having to lock one up to eat in peace while the other gobbles his small portion down, but poor Milo likes to graze and now he can’t.
We also make Loki chase every kibble before he gets it. Across the room, down the stairs, up the stairs…..
And this is how we monitor Loki’s weight – in a bowl on a scale, on the kitchen counter.
Can you tell he knows he’ll get a treat for sitting there?
On the upside, he’s lost 110 grams, and that’s nothing to sniff at when you’re just a little cat.

Wow those are some kitchen scales. Ours only go to 2.5 kg – nowhere near enough for Othello – who is also on a diet… Rescue cat mentality means he eats everything as though it will be his last meal ever

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/ladyrivermouse] 🙂 Well, the bowl is just a really big mixing bowl I use for making big batches of granola, but yes, it took awhile to find a scale that would go over 2.5kg, I finally found one that went to 10kg and snapped it up just for this purpose 🙂
Poor Othello…. one can understand his mental process. I would guess Loki’s constant hunger leads to him thinking that we are cruel captors who are slowly trying to starve him to death.
