October 23, 2016 – It was one of those days that dawned rainy and dismal, and we had a houseguest leaving before dinner.
What to do for the day?
On a hunch I suggested that we drive to Steveston and get away from the mountains where we live; away from where the clouds tend to pile up and drop their load, and out to the flatter stretches near the airport, where she was to fly out from after 5pm.
And it paid off, in spades. Not only didn’t we get rained on, but we actually enjoyed the warmth of some sunshine while we wandered the docks and perused the catches on the fishing boats, browsed the shops, ate fish & chips at our favourite spot – Pajos (Yum!), while a starling (and many other mooching birds) watched carefully for anything we might inadvertently drop to the ground.
And we decided to eat up the remaining time by driving out to Iona Beach where the sun was going down over the water in a spectacular show as a fellow in a boat shot bangers over the water to frighten the migrating snow geese away from the landing planes flight paths.
It pays to understand how the weather plays out across the local geography, it can mean the difference between a day staring out the window at miserable weather, and having a lovely walk by the ocean on a nice fall day.
I love being a tourist in my own home 🙂

Love Steveston!!
It’s such a neat little place, and although the anique shops I used to love are gone, there are still some funky little spots.
I know! It still retains the quaint atmosphere, though! I took my daughter and granddaughter there at the end of August after our trip to Disneyland.
I don’t watch the show, so I had no idea what she was on about, but my sister in law was so excited when a shopkeeper mentioned that the TV show Once Upon a Time is filmed there. Steveston is Storybrooke.
I don’t watch TV very much at all, so I wouldn’t know.
I will look it up
Once Upon A Time has been on for 3 or 4 seasons and is very popular. Fun to location spot while watching.
What station is that show on, Carol?
I only have PBS at my cottage.
CTV I think
