October 1, 2016 – It’s probably been about 5 – 7 years since I bought my first fiveleft bag from Lincoln. Since then my collection has grown to a family of five, plus one belt. Kirk has a wallet, a briefcase, and a change pocket. Every piece is hand stitched. My favourite is one that Lincoln made specifically for me last year, a design he no longer makes but, when I waxed about how much I loved the old design, he offered to get the special machine required to stitch the challenging bag back from another artist so he could make me one….of course I said “Yes Please”!
A few weeks ago an email came across my inbox. It was an invitation to a private event, a ten year anniversary for fiveleft. My shoes may be largely Fluevogs, but my bags are predominantly fiveleft. Since stumbling onto his bags, I have become pretty loyal to his works. And honestly, his lovingly crafted creations are just fabulous! Each one really is a fantastic piece of art, personally signed, sequentially numbered and stamped inside.
Tonight he was talking about how he started making bags, and how he is fascinated with these little containers that we, men and women, use to carry about the things we need to get through the day. He has a true passion for what he does, and his work has resulted in a community of local followers because, on top of his talent, he is a kind and interesting individual who makes the effort to have a conversation with everyone who stops to ask about his art. I’m never sure if he actually remembers us, or just recognizes a familiar face, or if he is just really, really good at making everyone who stops in his studio or at his booth at art shows feel like they are remembered. And the next time you meet and have another conversation, it seems that you’ve picked up where you left off, and that you are somehow, a little bit of a friend.
It doesn’t really matter if he knows me or not, he’s a really cool guy with an amazing talent.
So tonight, wine, chef crafted S’mores dipped in Bailey’s, new bag designs, music, and a fashion show…..you just know I didn’t leave empty handed…..
I thought I would be buying a tote bag I have been coveting for the past year, but then I walked in and saw an old design in a new texture and colour and fell in love.
On the upside, even though I did leave with a new bag, I also walked away less poor than I’d anticipated; the shoulder bag was less expensive than the tote. So it wasn’t all bad.
The downside is that I will see his works twice more before the end of the year, once at the Circle Craft Christmas Fair, and once at the EastSide Culture Crawl.
I might yet end up adopting that tote bag before the year is out….

Well, there are certainly much worse things you could have done than appreciate and support the work of a local artist. I say “Bravo!”.
😀 I love the way you look at things!
(It was hard to leave with just one)
? As you say, he will be back at Circle Craft – my favourite craft fair.
Mine too 😀
Have you ever had the opportunity to take Marne? I think she would love it.
No, she’s never been here at that time of year.
Hey Marne, you need to get yourself out here for the week/weekend of Remebrance day for the Circle Craft Market (http://circlecraftmarket.net)!
I would love to….you may even talk me into a bag. 🙂
C’mon over! We have a room for you to stay in 😀
LOL! I know…flights still aren’t cheap. 🙂 Plus Dave would wonder who I am if I bought a bag. 🙂
It’s never good to become too predictable 😉
They sure are nice!!!
Even better in real life 😀
oh oh oh…a lovely thing to do. Which did you gift yourself?
[https://www.flickr.com/photos/mary-lou_fletcher] Kirk was with me….. totally complicit…. 😀
[https://www.flickr.com/photos/8187412@N05] I went there intending on the bottom centre tote, but I came home with the top centre fold-over. The image doesn’t do it justice because of the spotlight on it, but the colour is an almost fluorescent orange overlaid and blended with a crazy yellow.
ohmygosh! I am so drawn to this color…..congrats on a beautiful purchase.
Looks like they don’t make briefcases anymore.
Yes, there were a few there, very nice ones. There is one in the last cube on the right, one up from the bottom – a fabulous new blue and black colour!
I looked online. Seemed to miss them. I’ll look again.
I don’t think he has all of his works on his site. But he did have at least three on display, and since at least one of them was a new finish, I’d say it’s a safe bet he’ll continue to make them. They are fantastic!
I need a way to have a look without going to Vancouver. Maybe I’ll email. I’ve been looking for a good leather briefcase that was interesting as well. And for less than the price of a new motorcycle.
Yes, they are there, “Career Carrier”, that’s the original shoulder briefcase, and then he has another one that is more of a 50’s style top opening one that he had on display as well. But the Career Carrier is really nice and comes in a bunch of finishes.

I see them. They looked smaller.
Out of scale with other bags on the same page.
Too small. I need some room, but not like the big lawyer bag.
Kirk has one, fits some papers, a notebook, and a 13″ Macbook with a few other things.
Yeah, I need to carry more than that.
He does make another brief, not a shoulder bag, not shown online though.
I’m emailing. The prices look great for the quality as well. I want one that ages and gets better looking. Like Sophia Loren.
His stuff ages beautifully and gets softer and more interesting with time. And the quality is fantastic….plus if anything ever goes wrong, his studio is easy to get to 😀
And I’d love to buy from a local manufacturer.

Paige Ackerman That with a shoulder strap might do it! I emailed, I’ll see what they have! Thanks 🙂
well not being a purse or shoe person when I see this I see a new lens lol…I’m sure the price would be very comparable. It’s a beautiful purse
