July 2, 2015 – I always loved these plants but could never manage to successfully grow them at the condo. I loved the rich red that blends to yellow at the neck, in an ombre fashion, almost like candy corn.
I also have always loved the way the flower spikes arch off in a graceful manner and taper off to smaller and smaller buds. They provide such an interesting and colourful pattern atop their strappy leaves.
Last year I gave them a try here at the new place and had success, and then discovered that they are a magnet for hummingbirds!
As soon as these start to bloom, the hummingbirds don’t give the artificial feeders a second glance.
