December 2, 2015 – When in Portland….
A group of us ducked out of the hotel for dinner this evening. We drove into Portland and headed downtown for dinner at the Deschutes Brewery. I’m already familiar with their beer…the Deschutes Black Butte Porter is a personal favourite, but tonight I opted for one of the taster flights.
Yesterday morning, before the conference started, three of us came into town to visit Powell’s Books, the first thing on my short list of hope-to-dos.
The second thing on the to-do list was a visit to Voodoo Doughnut for a namesake sweet. I didn’t think I’d get there, but I had a very small dinner in the hopes that we might, and the rest of the group was up for the walk, so off we went!
As I understand it, there is usually a line and one can wait outside for up to an hour to get in to buy one of Voodoo’s creations. They are open 24 hours a day, and they only take cash. As we walked up we could see that there was a line control outside the shop….but no line at all. We went right in and perused the fun creations behind the glass.
I stepped up and asked for a Voodoo and the girl behind the counter took one out for me, and leaned in with all seriousness and said “The only terrible part is that you ‘Will’ have to eat him…sort of like a black widow…” and then she grinned and took my cash. It took me a while to even consider taking a bite of him, he just made me giggle. I’ve never been so thrilled over a doughnut. LOL!
Seriously though, check out their creations and see why I HAD to come here!

Eventually eat him I did. And I was very glad that all I’d had for dinner was a bowl of salmon chowder. That funny little sweet Voodoo doll was half filled with custard, and half filled with raspberry jelly. I was stuffed…and happy to have had my Voodoo treat!
We walked our sweet treats off and headed back up the few blocks to Powell’s Books again, three of us had experienced it already, the other four were suitably impressed, as we had been, with the magnitude of the place, and one had to be nudged to leave. Such an amazing place!
And now I am convinced that I have to come back to Portland and spend a weekend, at least, exploring this wonderfully quirky city with it’s fabulous shops, amazing bookstore, great craft beer, and fantastic doughnuts.
Oh, and the conference has been good too 😉

.. that name will not be easily forgotten!!
I’ve been wanting to go there for years….and only really because of the name 😉
My favorite was the bacon maple.
I’ve heard that one is very good….clearly I will have to return several times to try others. But I just had to start with the namesake doughnut 🙂
