November 12, 2015 – Today was the second of two guest lectures I was giving to a class in my old faculty. Their course is on stress and coping in animals and I was providing a different aspect on that topic from the standpoint of fish in culture.
It’s kinda neat to go back to your roots and see it from a different angle, particularly when the room you are teaching in is the same room you gave your first Departmental seminar in somewhere back around 1993 or so.
Both days a student leaving the class as I was entering said hello with a huge smile, it was a young woman I mentored last year. So nice to see her!
It’s fun to visit, it’s fun to have a chance to do a few lectures, sit in on a few seminars throughout the year, and I enjoy (mostly) teaching my distance education courses, and I’m glad to still have access to the library. And that’s enough to make me happy and provide that little bit of something different from my other work life.
And then it’s always nice to have a chance to visit with some of the people who you knew back then, and who are still around. Fun to drop into an office and see the expression go from “who’s at my door?” to “HEY!!!! So awesome to see you, sit, let’s talk!!!”
Sometimes it feels like coming home, a little bit.
