August 23, 2015 – This Japanese Windflower (Anemone hupehensis) was one of the few plants that was here when we arrived and survived my viciousness with respect to flowers I don’t like. The plant almost go the heave-ho until I saw one blooming in a colleague’s yard and asked about it.
It flowers very late in the summer, which was why I’d concluded (incorrectly) that it was a weed.
I’m not a huge flower gardener. I like shades of green and variation in texture. I like plants that move and contrast. I find that most flowers come with ugly foliage and so most of them end up in the compost pile. If a flower is pretty and secondary to pretty foliage, then I consider the flowers a bonus. That’s pretty much how this plant works, and so it got a stay of execution.
The leaves look like great big maple leaves on long arching stems, and for that it was allowed to stay. The flowers were a surprising bonus when it finally came into bloom late last summer.
The garden is often useful when I have no inspiration for a photograph 🙂
