What's for dinner? (187/365)

July 6, 2015 – I love this time of year for all the wonderful fresh local produce. Asparagus was not something that was ever on the dinner plate when I was a kid though. Not sure why…but I probably wouldn’t have eaten it anyway…maybe that’s why Mom never cooked it. Or maybe she did cook it and just never put any on my plate.

I was the world’s pickiest eater as a kid. It was easier to identify what I would eat rather than what I wouldn’t.

Fruit of any kind was a sure thing.

In the meat department I would eat chicken (and grouse), fish, pork, and moose meat, but hated beef.

For vegetables I would happily eat potatoes and corn when cooked, but peas and carrots had to be raw. In the summer that was an easy thing with the gardens at both grandparents and ours at home. I loved salad, but if I saw a fleck of  cooked spinach in anything I would snub it. I’d happily eat tomatoes until I burst.

And that was about it…..

Wasn’t I a joy to feed as a kid!

I know how bad I was, particularly when Mom came to visit a couple of years after I’d moved to Vancouver and we went for lunch at Bridge’s Restaurant. I ordered salmon chowder and Mom looked at me and exclaimed “You don’t eat soup!”. To which I replied “well, I ordered it, so I plan to eat it.”

Yes, clearly I was a royal pain.

I’m a little better now 😉
