June 21, 2015 – June is usually a wet and somewhat miserable month in Vancouver…or at least it used to be. In recent years it’s changed a bit, it’s become hotter and drier
Last month we had a grand total of 6mm of rain…in May…in Vancouver.
So far in June we’ve managed about 7mm. And we usually call June “Junuary” because it’s often cold, wet, and miserable. But not this year. This year summer started sometime in May.
To celebrate May we resurrected an old tradition and bought seasons passes for Grouse Mountain again. It’s so fabulous up on the mountain…looking down over the city.
We packed a little picnic, with a couple of bottles of wine, and hoofed it down after a ride to the peak on the chair lift. You just can’t beat this view!
Grouse Mountain suffered a horrible winter this past year, there was basically no snow, and there was no skiing to speak of. The mountain is trying to recoup losses over the summer, and if they market well… they could.
Locals get a pretty good deal for seasons passes to the gondola and we used to buy passes annually, but haven’t for a few years. Given the weather, it seemed like a good idea.
So we took the gondola up, enjoyed the birds of prey demonstration (all birds that would have been destroyed without reconditioning and human assistance), and found a place halfway up the mountain to enjoy our picnic above the city.
As I’ve said so many times…I just can’t imagine living anywhere else. I feel so lucky to live here and I don’t ever want to leave.
Pretty great first day of summer.

That’s not a Grouse.
‘dr.paige knows that already’ 😎
What does she know, she’s a fish doctor.
‘this bird eats them’
Silly people…horned owls aren’t usually fish hunters, but they will eat grouse….

Awesome photo.
I agree….I was shocked to see the dryness of the greens at the US Open in Tacoma…..and we who are so much used to rain are trying to wrap our heads around the word "drought" here in the Pacific Northwest.

I had the same reaction to the "greens" and the surrounding grassy areas. I’ve never seen the Pacific Northwest so brown at this time of year.
