May 21, 2015 – I used to have a gargoyle, almost identical, that sat in a corner of our little garden at our old condo. Then one day I looked out and noticed a rock knocked over, and no gargoyle.
Someone had seen it from the other side of the glass fence, climbed over, and stolen him.
I was so upset!
We’d had other, less loved things stolen from the garden before, like tiki torches. It wasn’t a big deal, they were inexpensive.
But our gargoyle….we loved him. He sat there, fat and squat on his rock, partially hidden by a fern, peering out at us from the foliage.
I didn’t replace him, what was the point, someone would probably steal the replacement 🙁
So when we moved and I was on the hunt for a Japanese lantern and I stumbled on an almost identical gargoyle, but in a very heavy concrete, he had to come home with me.
I debated about where to put him at the new place. I wasn’t really concerned that he’d be stolen here, heck, we left two bicycles that we no longer wanted clearly visible and unlocked for two weeks na no one took them!
But the yard is also a lot bigger and I wanted to be able to see him, but still keep him a bit hidden. The top of the courtyard wall, hidden in amongst the branches of the large maple tree worked perfectly. At this time of year you have to know he is there to even see him.
Historically, it was believed that gargoyles could ward off creatures and unwanted spirits. There was thought that they would come alive at night and fly around the villages and towns to protect people while they were sleeping.
This is Queydo, the Guardian.
Blending in, but always watching…..
