May 11, 2015 – I remember when there were only two channels on the television and there always seemed to be something worth watching.
When Bruce Springsteen recorded the song 57 Channels and There’s Nothing On I thought…… “WOW, what a luxury to have 57 channels!”
Now it seems like even with over 200 channels available on cable TV there is even less worth watching.
What the heck happened to television?
Food Network used to have cooking shows that actually taught you something. Now it’s just reality cook-offs with items no one would ever combine. Shows like Chopped, Knife Fight, Cutthroat Kitchen, Donut Showdown, and Guy’s Grocery Games have replaced Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, and Christine Cushing. I used to love watching Food Network, now I no longer bother stopping as I flip by.
History Television used to have great documentaries, now they are in short supply and the channel is littered with shows the likes of Pawn Stars, Swamp People, and Biker Battleground.
Discovery used to have great science programming, now we get Amish Mafia, Moonshiners, and Bitchin’ Rides.
Every time I flip channels I am more inclined to do away with cable TV altogether. At least summer is almost here so the three or four shows we do watch with any regularity will be over for the season and the only reason to turn the TV on will be the news.
It’s hardly surprising that cable television is on a decline given the tidal wave of terrible reality shows. I always thought reality TV would be short lived.
Boy, was I EVER wrong on that one!
